This article covers how to use your LMS to set due dates and late penalties for Lumen One assignments.
Due dates for assignments in Lumen One are managed in your LMS.
You’ll set the due dates the same way for Canvas, Blackboard, and D2L/Brightspace.
Lumen One does not currently manage due dates within the product. Here are instructions to your LMS.
How do I...
- Manage Dates in Canvas
- Manage Dates in Blackboard Learn
- Manage Dates in Blackboard Ultra
- Set Dates in D2L/Brightspace
Moodle doesn’t allow for the use of Due Dates on External Tool assignments (Lumen One is considered an ‘external tool’), for Moodle users, assignment access can be controlled via Restrict Access by Dates.
Late Work Penalty settings varies by LMS
Canvas: Late Penalties in Canvas will be applied to Lumen One assignments as they are set in Canvas.
Blackboard tends to require these settings to be applied once scores are already in for an assignment. Blackboard help has more detail on late work.
Brightspace/D2L allows faculty to set both Due and Start/End dates, assignments submitted after the Due Date but before the End Date will be marked as “Late.”
However automatic penalties haven’t been added as a feature in Brightspace/D2l - Yet! If you’d like to upvote the feature request you can do so in the D2L community here.
Notes about Late Work Penalties:
- Because due dates in the LMS do not control access, student scores will be sent from Lumen One when students complete work.
- If late penalties are in play, students who complete a subsequent/better quiz attempt during a late penalty period may suffer a deduction.
- It’s important for students to be aware of taking new attempts after due dates have passed. Study Plan work won’t be impacted in this way.
- Instructors will always have access to the student’s best attempt grade in the Faculty Engagement Center
How do I… Manage Zeros for Past Due work in Lumen One?
With the exception of Moodle, which doesn’t offer the ability to set due dates for External LTI Tools (Moodle only allows for Availability Dates), all due dates for assignments will be set in the LMS.
Tips for managing zeros in Lumen One using your LMS
Canvas
While Canvas offers the option to submit Automatic Zeros for “native” assignments (those built within the Canvas system), unfortunately unlike the Late Penalty settings, this automatic setting doesn’t work with External Tools.
However, users in Canvas can quickly apply zeros to missed assignments using a few methods.
By Group
By default, all Lumen assignments are placed in the “Assignments” group, further grouping can be done if desired. To apply zeros to assignments past the due date, navigate to the Grades area, and scroll to the “Assignments” group heading (if you’ve placed your Lumen assignments into a different group, you can find that group instead).
Select the option to “Apply Score to Ungraded” making sure to select only those artifacts past due and submit. It’s recommended you do this at various time during the semester to keep student grades current.

*Important Note!
If you don’t see the option to Apply Score to Ungraded, contact your Canvas LMS Administrator. The setting called “Apply Score to Ungraded” can be enabled by the Admin from the “Feature Options” area of their administrative tools. Be sure to share this article with them.
By Assignment
Some faculty prefer to manage this by assignment once due dates have passed, as a method of checking in with students as due dates pass. To do this, navigate to the Grades area and find the assignment. Next, select the option for “Set Default Grade” and make sure you do not select to override any existing grades! This will apply a 0 only to students with “-” as a grade.
Moodle
Once the availability dates for your assignment has passed, or you’re managing grades for the semester, you can insert zeros for incomplete assignments in the Moodle Gradebook by selecting to view the single grade item (“Single View”).
Once you’ve selected the desired assignment, select the option to “bulk insert grades."
Be mindful to select “empty grades” only.
Here you can overwrite any empty grades with a 0, ensuring missed work is accurately scored.
Blackboard
Blackboard Ultra:
Blackboard Ultra has a feature that allows you to have the gradebook automatically enter a zero for assignments when the due date has passed. For most users this will be enabled by default, however some institutions may disable it. Detailed information on this feature can be found in this Blackboard Help Article. The setting can be enabled by clicking the settings cog in the Grades area and checking the box for “Automatic Zeros”.

Blackboard Learn:
Blackboard Learn doesn’t appear to offer the ability to manage zeros for missing assignments, zeros will need to be entered manually for missing assignments.
Brightspace/D2L:
Brightspace requires that admins enable the tool for Automatic Zeros at the Organizational level. For detailed information about enabling this tool please see the D2L Product Help.
Once the LMS Admin has enabled this feature at the organizational level, instructors can select it as a grading option.
*Important Note! For D2L/Brightspace, this option cannot be applied retroactively and will only apply to assignments with future due dates - so it’s important to set this up at the beginning of class.
Navigate to the Grades area of the course, then select “Settings”. Under the tab for “Calculation Options” look for the setting to automatically score 0 after the due date:
*Important Note!
If you do not see this option in your Grade Settings - you’ll need to reach out to your Brightspace LMS Administrator to enable this setting for your course and provide this article to them.
