What are Submission Attempts in Canvas and how do they work with Lumen One?

This article explains “Submission Attempts” using Canvas assignments. They can cause problems with Lumen One content if not used properly. We highly recommend that for all Lumen materials the Submission Attempts are set to: Unlimited.

“Submission Attempts” using Canvas assignments can cause problems with Lumen One content if not used properly. We highly recommend that for all Lumen materials the Submission Attempts are set to: Unlimited. This is the default setting for all External Tool assignments, best practice is that it not be changed, you can see the option by clicking on Assignments, then Edit, and finally “more options.”

Canvas Submission 1

“External Tool” refers to the fact that Lumen One is the tool; for Lumen One Quizzes - attempts are set in the Faculty Engagement Center, for Study Plans it’s critical to keep them set to ‘unlimited’ so that students can achieve all possible points for completion.

Canvas Submission 2

Limiting Submission Attempts in Canvas does not control how many times students can access and submit, but it does control how many times scores are sent to the Canvas gradebook.

For Lumen One Study Plans this can be problematic, since Study Plan work is both participation based and cumulative. Limiting the Submission Attempts for Study Plans will prevent students from getting credit for work completed.

For Quizzes, attempts are controlled within the Faculty Engagement Center, and by design the minimum number of attempts that students can have at the quizzes is 2 - which means limiting the Canvas Submissions to 1 can cause confusion, as students are told within Lumen One that the highest score will be the one that counts.

FEC Quiz Attempts 3-1

I limited the attempts to something other than unlimited in Canvas. What should I do to fix it?

First, immediately change the attempt limit back to “Unlimited” in Canvas, then contact Lumen Learning Support and let us know that you need grades to be pushed. Our support team will need the instructor’s name and course name in order to assist.

Why does Canvas allow users to do this?

Some instructors want their assignments to be “First Score Counts” - so this setting can ensure that only the first score is reported to the Canvas Gradebook. However, since Lumen One offers a default of 2 quiz attempts we don’t recommend this, but if an instructor chooses to use this setting they should communicate to students effectively to ensure there’s no confusion.

We continue to work with Canvas to ensure that we can offer users the clearest experience possible using both tools.
