Candela: Adding and Editing Images

Adding New Images

To add new images or edit existing ones, use the Add Media button at the top of the Edit Page screen.

The next screen allows you to drag and drop an image from your computer desktop or search for a file on your computer to upload.

Note: be sure all images used are Creative Commons licensed, or are in the Public Domain, or are your personal images that you're willing to share with Creative Commons licensing.

Once your desired image has been added, you can title the image, include a caption (optional), add Alt Text (for screen readers), and include a description if desired.

  • Alignment pull-down menu: located on the right-hand side of the screen, allows image with surrounding text to be left-aligned, centered, or right-aligned

  • Link To pull-down menu: located on the right-hand side of the screen, allows you to determine how users access the image file.

    • Recommendation to use: media files/image imports rather than external URL links

  • Size: located on the right-hand side of the screen, allows pixel size customization in the book page

    • Recommendation to use: default medium for most pictures, large for pictures with fine detail or text, and thumbnail for very large images or text-heavy images which allows user to click to enlarge the full image (see example below)

Click to Enlarge (add this note as a caption in the caption field)

Editing Existing Images

Did you place an image but aren't quite happy with how it looks? Here are some shortcuts to editing it.

On the edit screen of a page, click your mouse on the image. A menu bar will appear over the image as shown below in orange. The first four options allow you to quickly change the alignment of the image, in relation to the surrounding text.

Menu Bar

Clicking on the Pencil icon of that menu bar will take you to a screen like the one below where you can alter the image to meet your needs.

Clicking the "X" button removes the image from the page you're editing. However, it will still be available in your course's Media Library, so you can include it again later on this page or any other, if you want.

To access your Media Library, click Add Media from the edit screen of any page. Next to Upload Files is a tab called Media Library which will let you see all of the existing images in the course.

When one image is selected, like the image of Warren Buffet in this example, information about that image appears on the right column. From here, you can edit the image similarly to importing a new one.

Images, like other OER content, will need to be cited. Read more about adding citations here.
